Chess lessons built from your own mistakes

The fastest way to learn from your chess mistakes is to replay them: the same position, your move, and the move you should have found. Chess X-Ray does it for you. Give your chess.com or Lichess username, Stockfish reads your games, and you get the 10 mistakes you repeat most as lessons you can replay.

Why your own mistakes teach more

A puzzle collection trains positions you will never see again. Your games are different: you reach the same openings and the same structures every week, so the mistake you made last Tuesday is waiting for you in your next game.

Most players do not lose because they lack knowledge. They lose because they play the same wrong move in the same position, without noticing it is the same position. Fix that one move and the points come back every time it shows up.

How it works

  1. Type your chess.com or Lichess username. No password, nothing to install: we read your public games.
  2. Stockfish goes through your recent games, every time control, and measures what each of your moves cost.
  3. We group the positions you keep reaching and keep the ones where you play the same losing move again and again.
  4. You get your 10 costliest mistakes as lessons: your exact position, your usual move in red, your turn to find better, then the right line and the point to remember.

Reviewing your games yourself vs. Chess X-Ray

Reviewing your own games works, but it is slow: one game at a time, and you only notice a pattern after you have lost to it five times. Reading hundreds of games at once is what a machine does well. It sees that the move you played in March and the move you played yesterday came from the same position, and that both cost you the game.

For one game, the free game review is enough. For the mistakes that keep coming back, you need all your games at once.

What a lesson looks like

Each lesson starts on the exact position from your game, with your side of the board. You see the move you usually play, marked in red. You try to find better. Then the right line is played on the board, with the one idea to remember. Lessons stay in your account, so you can replay them until the right move comes without thinking.

Frequently asked questions

How do I learn from my chess mistakes?

Replay them. Go back to the position before the mistake, find the better move yourself, then play the right line. Doing it on the mistakes you repeat, rather than on random puzzles, is what makes the next game different.

What is the best way to analyze my chess games?

For one game, an engine review is enough. For your habits, look at many games at once: the same opening positions come back, and so do the same mistakes. That is what Chess X-Ray reads.

Do you need my chess.com or Lichess password?

No. We read your games through the public chess.com or Lichess API, using your username. We never ask for your password and never sign in to your account.

Can I see a lesson before I start?

Yes. The streamers’ courses are built exactly like yours, from their public games, and open without an account.

How long does it take?

Usually about 10 minutes, 24 hours at the latest.
