Italian Game traps: 6 mistakes at 600-800 Elo
The Italian Game is where most players start: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4, and the bishop already looks at f7. At 600-800 the games are short and sharp. The f7 pawn is attacked again and again, and a single careless move decides the game in a few moves.
We took the Lichess blitz and rapid games from August 2026 where both players were rated 600 to 800, followed the Italian move by move, and had Stockfish check every position where many players took the same wrong turn. Every line below was verified by the engine. All six examples are told from White’s side. For the main ideas of the opening, read our Italian Game guide.
Part 1: punish it
Three Black mistakes, three punishments. All three come after 3...Nf6 4.Ng5, when White’s knight and bishop both aim at f7.
1. 5...Nxd5, and the Fried Liver
After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5, 67% of Black players take back with 5...Nxd5. It is the most natural move on the board, and it lets White play the Fried Liver: 6.Nxf7! Kxf7 7.Qf3+. The king has to come forward to defend the knight on d5. Here 70% of Black players retreat with 7...Ke8, and 8.Bxd5 wins the piece back. White is winning.
Even after the best defence, 7...Ke6, the black king stays in the middle of the board and White keeps the advantage. Black should play 5...Na5 instead, hitting the bishop, and the game is balanced.
2. 4...Qe7, and the bishop takes f7 with check
After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5, 14% of Black players defend f7 with 4...Qe7. But the queen does not really defend it. 5.Bxf7+! comes with check, so the queen cannot take back, and after 5...Kd8 6.Bb3 White is a pawn up and Black can no longer castle. White is clearly better.
Watch the move order: 52% of White players take with the knight first, 5.Nxf7, and after 5...d5 the game is balanced again. Check first, with the bishop. Black should play 4...d5 instead.
3. 4...h6, and the knight forks the queen and rook
In the same position, 7% of Black players ask the knight to leave with 4...h6. The knight does not leave. 5.Nxf7! takes the pawn and forks the queen on d8 and the rook on h8. After 5...Qe7 6.Nxh8, White has won a full rook and is winning.
Black should play 4...d5 instead, and the game is balanced.
Part 2: avoid it
Now the White mistakes that come up most in the Italian at 600-800. In all three, the position is balanced before White’s move and Black is better after it.
4. 4.Ng5 against 3...Bc5
After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5, 15% of White players jump to g5 to attack f7, as if Black had played 3...Nf6. But with the bishop on c5, nothing stops the queen: 4...Qxg5! takes the knight for free. After 5.d3 Qxg2 6.Rf1, Black is a piece and a pawn up and White is lost.
Play 4.O-O or 4.c3 instead. Castle or build the center first, and the game is balanced. Before you play Ng5, check whether the black queen can take it.
5. 7.Bg5 against the pin
After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.Nc3 Nf6 5.d3 d6 6.O-O Bg4, 48% of White players copy Black with 7.Bg5. But Black’s pin is the stronger one. 7...Nd4! puts a second attacker on the pinned knight on f3. After 8.Be3 Nxf3+ 9.gxf3 Bh3 10.Re1, material is equal but the pawns in front of your king are broken and Black is better.
Play 7.h3 instead. Ask the bishop to choose before it can hurt you, and the game is balanced.
6. 6.Bxd5 in the fork trick
After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Nc3 Nxe4 5.Nxe4 d5, Black has used a small fork to win back the piece, and the game is balanced. Now 41% of White players take with 6.Bxd5. After 6...Qxd5! the queen takes back and hits the knight on e4. After 7.Nc3 Qd6, material is equal, but Black has the two bishops and the center pawn, and Black is better.
Play 6.Bd3 instead. After 6...dxe4 7.Bxe4 you keep your good bishop, and the game is balanced.
What to take away
- After 4.Ng5 in the Two Knights, the f7 pawn is the target: count its defenders before every Black move.
- Against 4...Qe7, take on f7 with the bishop and check, not with the knight.
- Before you play Ng5, make sure the black queen cannot just take the knight.
- Do not answer a pin with a pin when the opponent can bring a knight to d4.

These patterns come from many games between players at your level, not from a theory book. Your own games have patterns too, and they are probably not the same ones. Chess X-Ray finds the moves where you lost your advantage in your chess.com or Lichess games, groups them by opening, and turns them into lessons you replay until they stick.
